Huntsville, Alabama -- Chapter B, Region A

The month of April has been very interesting. You will see in the District Director's article that there were about 1200 participants for the Rally in Mobile. There is a very high probability that the District Rally will be in Mobile again next year, but nothing is definite so far. There should be some stories to tell about the twelve or so inches of rain in Mobile, something about floating trailers and Roto-Rooter trucks? Probably better just say it was a very memorable trip.
The District Director offered his sincere appreciation and thanks for those of you who attended the District Rally and special thanks for the group of Chapter B folks that served as dedicated worker Bees at the Rally. I really appreciate the people who pitched in with the Bike show. We charged through some confusion and pulled off a good bike show. I think the competition was pretty even within each class and there were no losers from my perspective. The weekend after the District Rally Chapter B showed a majority at the Experienced Riders Course. The training is very different than in years past, but all I heard was positive comments about it and all said they were glad they took the course. Just my opinion, but I believe we should do some type of training at the beginning of the riding season every year. The saving grace for us here in Alabama is the fact that we can ride a lot during the winter months and maintain our riding skills and keep the maintenance up on our motorcycles.
Chapter B must be putting out wonderful Karma. Good things keep happening. We had two new participants join us for our monthly meeting. I know we had a lot of fun, a lot of door prizes, some associated with a pop quiz on maintenance. We have GWRRA members from New York and Ohio move to the area and drop in for bike night at Sonic. The number of people at the Sonic on any given night will vary according to the weather, but there are always different bikes and fun things going on.
So, I have saved the not so good news for last. Since this is a very public forum, I will not spell out names, but write in general terms. The daughter of one of our chapter members was the unfortunate target of an inattentive driver. The "inattentive driver" was distracted by a cell phone. Yes, there were some injuries and severe damage to the daughter's car. It is unfortunate that the modern convenience of a cell phone and automobile are so tragically combined with regularity. Please reevaluate your cell phone usage and driving awareness, concentrate on driving and talk on your cell phone when you stop.
Please keep Gary and Sharon Province in your prayers. Sharon is still in the hospital recovering from surgery. Those of us who have experienced similar medical drama will understand the power of prayer and knowing there is an extended family only a phone call away.
Keep our Cancer Survivors in mind. Come out on Friday Night, 6 May and show your support for Relay for Life. Get in touch with Mike and Alice Chapman, Roy and Anita Fosnight, or Don and Ellen Grundt. They will give you details on the schedule of events so you don't miss out on anything. Everyone is encouraged to bring chairs. You can walk or just come out and show your support for a good cause. Yes, there will be food at the Relay!
Thanks for all that you do in support of Chapter B, the District Staff and our chosen charitable events. Your thoughtful contributions are what make Chapter B the best!
Mike and Cindy
Tennessee Rally
There’s Cold in them there hills
The Chapter B family was well represented at the Tennessee District Rally in Pigeon Forge, TN on 22 and 23 April. Nineteen participants and 12 bikes departed Huntsville on Friday morning in a virtual downpour. Yes, it started out like Monsoon II for those that attended the AL District Rally in Mobile earlier in the month. Although it was wet, we enjoyed the warmest temperatures of the weekend as we made our way northeast, bypassing the Chattanooga freeways. Our course consisted mainly of back-roads and took us through Mentone, AL, Summerville & Chatsworth, GA, then north and east through Ocoee, TN, Murphy & Cherokee, NC, then over the Smoky Mountains into TN and Pigeon Forge. Although wet, it was a great ride with lots of twisties and beautiful scenery. To top it off, we finished Friday with a great group meal at the Apple Barn.
Saturday’s temperatures were substantially cooler with the high for the day probably recorded in the early morning hours. Saturday was vendor day, with everyone in need of motorcycle goodies making a run on the vendors. It was cold and wet, with many of the vendors keeping their display areas closed-up to try and keep the cold and drizzle out. I suspect Evan Hubbard got the oil filter award, since he got his 1800 outfitted with a new set of Dunlop Elite III sneakers. I managed to find a few things I needed as well, including one of those neat little Cycle Pumps like Russ Werman used to inflate Sue LeFrance’s front tire a couple of weeks ago on the covered bridge ride. That little pump took her front tire from flat to 41 pounds in a little over a minute. I vowed to get me one of those, and I did. That’s what Rally’s are for. The cool temperatures and rainy weather kept attendance down, so the vendors weren’t busy. It was a good opportunity to browse and negotiate for bargains. After the run on the vendors, Roy Fosnight lead a group ride to Deals Gap and Cades Cove. From what I’ve heard, they all had a great time. For me, I took Linda shopping.
On Sunday morning, we awoke to 35° temperatures and snow-flurries. It was definitely a Gerbing kind of day – if you had them. Otherwise, everyone dressed in lots of layers – looked like a bunch of Michelin people. With the temperatures being what they were, the Super-slab provided the fastest route home, so we took one last twisty ride to Maryville, then jumped on the interstate and headed to Huntsville. All-in-all, good friends and a good trip – in spite of the Cold in them there hills.

It has recently come to my attention that many riders appear to suffer attention deficit disorder of some sort. By that, I mean our minds seem to wander after we have been riding for more than a few minutes, of course this time period varies from person to person and ride to ride, but it affects us all at one time or another. One of the major symptoms is our lack of ability, or desire, to maintain the proper position in a staggered formation. By the book, a staggered formation has riders alternating left track right track in a single highway lane, the leader always in the left track with a minimum of 2, but recommend 4, second intervals between you and the bike in the same track in front of you. The argument for a 4 second interval is that in 2 seconds you do not have time to adequately assess the event in front of you and still have time to react (stop or swerve). Yes, a 4 second interval may stretch the formation out but remember the preferred formation for safe team, or group riding is no more than 4 or 5 bikes.
Another symptom of this lack of attention to detail is the occasional passing of other bikes in the same lane to maintain the staggered formation. This is one of the more dangerous actions you can take. The next time you are part of a formation get a look at just how close your handlebars are to that other bike when there are two of you sharing a single lane; not a comfortable distance by any definition.
I recently received a report from GWRRA listing Rider Ed Program members and the currency of their levels. Many have yet to renew for 2005, please contact me[Edu cato r] for a renewal form, or if you are unsure about your situation, call or email me[Edu cato r] and I’ll tell you where the Association records list you, let’s keep our profile high in this regard. I will be happy to help anyone with the necessary paperwork.

As Mike announced at the April Chapter meeting, Joe and Charlotte Smith after several years of faithful service to the Chapter as the Hospitality Committee have stepped down to actively pursue a new position as “Leisure Seeking Retirees”. We wish them well in their new endeavor. Bill and I have agreed to take over the Hospitality Committee duties. Please contact us, Hos pita lity, if you know of any of our Chapter family in need of “Hospitality”. We are also attempting to update the list of Chapter birthdays and anniversaries. We would appreciate it greatly if everyone could email us with the date of their birthday and, if applicable, their anniversary. Please also indicate if you are a rider or co-rider and the color of your bike or trike.

The theme for this year’s rally should have been changed to hurricane watch from the published Bay Watch! Depending on where one was in Mobile or Baldwin county, there was a reported 10 to 13 inches of rain from Thursday morning to Friday morning. I had never experienced a Wing just totally soaked while parked under a full cover pulled all the way to the ground.
The ride down for the Wednesday morning group was great as always. Mike and Cindy were actually on time to swing by and pick up Netsybro and I on the way to Tommy and Melissa’s. This is the second or third time in a year that they have been on time. I am going to recommend both have a medical examination as soon as possible.
Breakfast at Jack’s in Cullman certainly improved the group’s morale. A stop for gas in Pelham brought the group back to earth as the sticker shock at the pump set in. Onward to Greenville for lunch at Cracker Barrel after a stop at the Pecan place just north of there where the group indulged in sampling all of the different flavored pecans.
Arriving at the rally site at almost supper time, we quickly parked, unloaded, covered and then walked to dinner on Dauphin Street. A small micro brewery served up a pretty good dinner. The home brew, actually two of them and I had no trouble sleeping that night.
We awoke to cloudy skies and then the rain started. It rained, rained, rained and rained some more. A large group took a pay as you go shuttle van to dinner at the Oyster House located on Battleship Parkway just east of the Battleship Alabama Park. Great Place, good service and the only complaint was too much food to eat. Thought I would never say that, but it was true for the Oyster House.
The rain continued with wind and hail Thursday night and finally stopped in the early afternoon on Friday or so we thought. A small group mounted up and rode over to the Tangiers Outlet stores in Foley to do some non Wing shopping. Netsybro took it easy on my credit card for a change. On the way home, the skies darkened and then opened up one last time. I have not felt wind on a bridge that bad since riding to Key West last year. I was glad to see the Bankhead tunnel and our hotel just a few blocks down Government Street once you exited the tunnel.
Saturday the group worked their first ever (and maybe last) bike show. A hearty thanks to all who helped out here because I will be the first to say I did not know what the heck I was doing at the start. Some say I did not know what I was doing at the finish either, but I suppose that is debatable.
We certainly had some memorable moments while at the rally this year. I believe based on personal experience that Mike is going to demonstrate proper Gold Wing kick stand deployment while Randall is going to demonstrate proper Gold Wing kick stand retraction. Between these two and their demonstrations we can all laugh at ourselves the next time we too goof!
John Boy, or so I am told, won the oil filter award. Based on the story I heard, it is probably true and I would assume he will be receiving thank you cards in the mail from several vendors. His new white Wing sure looks good though!
I on the other hand exhibited a lot of restraint at the vendors. My bill was less than $100. I did purchase a brake flasher for the GL 1500 and a charging system monitor and license plate frame for the Kawasaki Concours. For those that have not heard, I am the proud owner of a 2002 Kawasaki Concours. All men go through the “Mid Life Crisis”. Some chase younger women and some chase faster motorcycles. I chose the latter. Trust me it is safer!
For those that are not familiar with the Electrical Connection charging system monitor, just check out Richard’s or my Wing. For $25 you know whether the darn thing is working or not. If you just gots to know how many volts it is putting out, then invest in the high dollar monitoring systems. I would encourage all to install some monitoring system as a Wing, or any other motorcycle for that matter will not run very long on the battery only.
Cheers go to Brenda for hanging in there for the entire rally. A real rainy mess greeted her, at this, her first GW rally. The chapter hopes she enjoyed herself and will become a regular participant at chapter events. Richard on the other hand has put Brenda’s name on everything in site: Helmet, Her Jacket, Back of Bike and it is rumored that he had it embroidered on his socks. That’s OK Richard, we all took a vote and we believe Brenda is a keeper! Again, welcome Brenda!
I must say that the ride home was much drier than the rally. The sun was out and it was just a great day to be riding. Some of the group stopped for an early dinner at CB in Fultondale, while others had to make it to the kennel before it closed to retrieve man’s best friend.
Until next time – Ride safe!

“RELAY FOR LIFE” is an event to raise money for cancer research and help fight cancer, and ALL the money raised in this event stays in North Alabama. Chapter “B” has been an active participant for FIVE years now and has truly enjoyed being a part of this worthwhile cause, did you know our family has several “Survivors”. This years event is right around the corner on 6 May 2005 at Milton Frank Stadium. This year Chapter B is going to give away a handheld GPS and you can buy chances for only $5 apiece.
Alice and I are the Team Captains this year and would like to invite everyone in Chapter B (and friends or other family) to stop by and enjoy the events. Did you know that “THE KING” ELVIS will be there to entertain you. We are not asking you to come and walk that buttie off or even stay all night, or DRESS UP like someone in the chapter did a couple years ago (R______), but simply stop by and say HI and have a snack or sandwich (no tires to kick here).
“Thanks in advance and really hope to see you all there.”
Mike and Alice
It sure was great seeing and talking with all of you at the Rally. Did you have a good time and did you like the location? Let me know your opinions. I think we had a good Rally in spite of the 12.5 inches of rain in 18 hours Thursday and Friday! We were down a couple hundred in total attendance, but that was due to the rain. We had 1200+ at the Rally. We want you all to know how much we appreciate the work all the Chapter Directors, Members and the District Staff did to make the Rally special for us. Thank You All!! It was a real pleasure for us to be able to fell that our first Rally was a success. Special thanks to Ray & Cindy Erickson for the unending help and support they provided with the details and registration! Thanks also to Jim & Sue Jackson for all your help!
Thursday evening we served ice cream to over 300 and I believe everyone enjoyed the ice cream and visiting with old and new friends, I know I did. We also gave away a set of tires after the ice cream. Hopefully we can do that again next year. After the ice cream social, there was a short get together for the Chapter COYs to meet with the judges prior to the District selection. Friday morning the District Couple of the Year selection was held and I’m thankful I did not have to judge. We had 8 extremely talented and capable couples in the selection. We want to say thanks to all the Chapter Couples, whether you chose to be in the District selection or not. We are very proud of all of you! After the results were tabulated, our new 2005-2006 Alabama District Couple was announced. They are, Jon & Diane Klaaren from Chapter F in Montgomery. Congratulations you two! We know you will make Alabama proud. I believe they may well be the next Region A Couple!
Friday and Saturday a number of seminars were held and well attended. A number of people obtained their certification in First Aide and CPR. Donny & Charlotte did an outstanding job with the best-dressed competition and the talent show on Friday evening. After the talent show, we had the lighted bike show. There were a number of great looking bikes that paraded around inside the arena. It was great to be able to have it inside the arena with the lights turned out. After the lighted bike show, we again gave away a set of tires.
Saturday we held the bike show outside next to the vendors. There was good participation for this event. We had entries in most all categories. I know there are a lot of activities I have missed, but hopefully this is some of the highlights.
The Honorable Michael Dow, Mayor of Mobile was not able to attend closing ceremonies, but he expressed his thanks to all of you who visited Mobile and said he hopes we will be able to return next year. Jon Sharpston entertained us with some great music at the beginning of closing ceremonies. After Staff introductions and news from other District Directors, we got down to what everyone was waiting for, the drawings! Rider Ed gave away a pair of chaps and a jacket. Cindy Erickson won the chaps. The 50/25/25 drawings were won by ray Erickson and another whom I don’t remember at present. The first grand prize ticket drawn had a choice between a 5 day cruise for 2 or $1500.00. The first winner, and I don’t have his name, took the $1500.00. Next was the cruise. Sue Jackson was the lucky winner. Then we gave away another set of tires. All total we gave away 3 sets of tires this year.
Sunday morning as we were packing up to leave, I learned that Ray Erickson had been taken to the hospital with severe bleeding. We stayed in Mobile Sunday to learn Ray’s status and to meet with the hotel people regarding 2006 Rally. I’m glad to say Ray is home now, even though the problem was never diagnosed.
Nothing definite yet on next year, but things are progressing. I did finalize arrangements for 2006 Snowball and Officers Conference yesterday. The date will be January 7 at Embassy Suites in Montgomery again. We will attempt to get the financial reports out of the way Friday evening. More details to come.
Hug somebody you love and don’t forget to wave.
