Cold Weather Tips

The Rally season is officially over and for some their bikes may go into hibernation in the next few months while many of us may ride more. At least we in the southern part of the state we seem to ride more as the weather becomes more pleasant down here and we don’t have the severe weather experienced in northern parts of the state. We suffer the summers where it is more pleasant elsewhere so it evens out.
New Years is a special time for many of us as it is a time to reflect and make resolutions. For others it's a time to ride. The last 24 years Chapter A has made a ride to Ezell's in Lavacia AL. It has been a special event for us and the last three years we have had company from all over the state as well as Mississippi. Three years ago we had 77 people show up, two years ago we had 177 and last year 300. This is quite an event where there is a sizable 50/25/25 held and the restaurant plans for us all year. They put out the big pots of black eyed peas and bring out the catfish. Service as you may expect is challenged but considering the crowd they handle it well. If you would like to join us we ask you let Max Tanner or myself know where we can better prepare the restaurant.
We had a great time at the Mississippi Rally where between 50 and 60 showed up for our Alabama lunch at Aunt Jennies. Jim Jackson walked away with more than he came with and so did I as we shared the 50/50 drawing at the lunch. You ask how we could share that well all the money was given away. Now that is the way I like to see 50/50's run.
We are entering the time of the year where rally registration starts picking up. We will have a good time. As part of the activities we will have a crazy hat contest so prepare your hats and lets have some fun with it. We will also have a dunking booth. Volunteers will be solicited at Snowball so be prepared to let me know if your CD's will participate. District Staff will also participate and after purchasing your throws you will be given a ticket where you could win half the money collected at the dunking booth. In addition, we will have a chapter challenge so stand by, we will have a good time. I have talked with many vendors. We can expect the ones back from last year and it looks like we are going to pick up some new ones. This years rally looks to be bigger and better than last years which wasn’t bad at all.
You need to plan to attend Snowball this year. We will have a great deal to discuss and hope to be able to get with our CD's one on one once again.
If you're not having fun then attend more rides and events. If you don't have them planned, start planning more. Include everyone in your planned trips as that will create unity in your chapter. Get evolved. Help your CD they can’t do it by themselves. The way to have fun is to participate. If you don’t participate then don't complain. The people that are active impact the decisions made more than those that aren't.
We hope to see you soon.

Breeze of GodThe Breeze of God comes in and moves you… While on an RV trip to Branson, Missouri, I was inspired to write this. Who reads it, I'm not sure. I don't go to church, but God graces me. Only by the Grace of God am I here. My life has been on a rocky journey – also a journey of my spirituality. On my path I came to a 4-way stop of options:
You have to know what you are looking for in order to recognize it. I was looking for love, companionship, a path in order to help others, knowledge, proof of my existence, and an answer to the question if I’m worthy… I have a wonderful partner / companion in my husband and son, but I felt there was more of life to be experienced for all of us. In my opinion, owning a Goldwing makes one worth nothing; sharing a Goldwing and the experiences involving it gives one Grace. Sharing truly strengthens a bond not only in family, but all relationships such as work, community, and future prospects. Owning a Goldwing is not only a privilege but an avenue that opens up closed roads otherwise where a detour might be taken. Along the way in Branson I became homesick. I could not figure why. It had only been a couple of days; I've been away from home longer than that before. While lost in my thoughts, we got a phone call from someone in Chapter B, someone famous for U-turns. Something just clicked inside. I realized I was homesick for what makes me happy and for what gives me Grace. I missed the sharing. I missed the good feeling of "family." I wanted to feel the breeze. Now that I have a Goldwing, I take the time to feel the Breeze of God when I travel down the road. I think about the blessings I have, but most of all I think about how I can help be of service to someone else through Grace. The Goldwing - it's not just a motorcycle. It's a way to feel a stronger breeze. By Tammy Hollingsworth |
(This article was taken from the GWRRA Leadership Division Curriculum)
It is the means whereby GWRRA has FUN, grows, teaches, educates, informs and establishes a basis for GWRRA’s very existence. The chapter meeting is the most important aspect of what we strive the hardest to accomplish; educating our Members in the ways of safety, skill, knowledge and the FUN OF GWRRA. If we, as officers, recognize and acknowledge these responsibilities to our Members, we understand the importance and the difficulty of obtaining our goals as represented in our motto, “FRIENDS FOR FUN, SAFETY AND KNOWLEDGE.” In paraphrasing an adage, “You can take Members to water, but you can’t make them drink.” We understand, in a volunteer, hobby environment, the difficulty in even getting our Members TO the water, much less getting them to take a drink. We have found the only way to get them involved (so we can provide the “water”) is to provide a positive, FUN and worthwhile environment. We call this a chapter meeting.
Properly done, a chapter meeting is the perfect medium to carry out our prime responsibility to our Members. It provides them a place to come to gain fun, friends, knowledge and camaraderie. It provides us the opportunity to “sugar coat” the pills of safety so we can teach our "family" the tools and skills that will enable them to live longer and to better enjoy their chosen hobby -- Motorcycling.
Consider the word "meeting." It can be a little misleading. "Meeting" sometimes implies business, minutes, politics, reports, no-fun, dryness, rigid structure, speeches, and is capable of being BORING!! Obviously, this is not what a GWRRA chapter meeting should be!
Our immediate goal is to try and entice our Members to come to a monthly activity with their "family." We do this by making our chapter meetings FUN! We make it a relaxed, non-political, nonreligious, friendly place where there are No Strangers, but has good food, interesting people and educational programs. This is not as difficult as it sounds, but it is very basic to accomplishing another of our missions: EDUCATE! If we can motivate our Members to attend a chapter meeting, our job is half done. We must then insure that the meeting is so good, so interesting, so entertaining, so rewarding and so much FUN that they will return each and every month. They will also "talk it up" with their friends, thereby helping GWRRA receive the positive publicity that goes a long way in attracting new Members into our “family.”
Good FUN chapter meetings cannot be overemphasized. They are the backbone of a successful chapter. Good luck, and may all your efforts be amply rewarded. How do we make a good chapter meeting?? It is a compilation of many things.
You have your geographical area decided upon and you have TEN or more Members you’ve been meeting with and discussing future plans for a chapter. Now you’re ready to get into 2nd gear.
You need to decide the time and place for your chapter “Kick-Off” Meeting. This is to be your first meeting as a GWRRA officer. It will be your first “official” chapter meeting. Your District Director will be there, or will have someone there in their place.
Once this time and place has been decided upon, you need to send out letters, call your friends, put out flyers, talk to Honda Dealers, maybe even put a small ad in the “motorcycles for sale” section of the newspaper. Your District Director may also provide you with a mailing list of GWRRA members living within your general area.
Your District Director can tell you about flyers you can get, and samples of letters sent out by others before their Kick-Off Meeting. These will give you some ideas. They will help you design yours when you’re ready. Your District Director can also tell you other ways new chapters have been started.
At your chapter “Kick-Off” meeting, you should be presented with your Certificate of Chaptership. You may also receive your Badge of Office at this meeting. These items provide visual proof to all present that a Chartered Chapter of the Gold Wing Road Riders Association now exists within your assigned geographical Area, and that you are authorized by GWRRA to begin to organize the chapter with those willing Members, and prospective members. For the next ninety (90) days, all those GWRRA Members who pitch in and help get the chapter up and running, will be Charter “Members” by virtue of their work and participation. This applies even to those Members who may actually reside outside your assigned geographical area. (All of us are Members of ALL chapters.
This 90 day period (or a similar time period that you choose) is your Chartering Period and all those Members who choose to become chapter “Members” with their participation in chapter activities are considered “Charter Members” of this new chapter. They are eligible to receive a special U-shaped rocker to wear under their 4” GWRRA logo patch with the words, “Charter Member” on it. No more will be issued after the initial stated period. Your District Director will assist you in acquiring these Charter Member rockers which are given free from the Home Office.
There are some important distinctions to keep in mind when conceptualizing and discussing geographical boundaries and chapter memberships...
CHAPTER BOUNDARIES, refer to identifiable geographic perimeters; district lines, identify the District Directors geographic area of “prime” responsibility; Zip codes, for convenience sake, identify the Chapter Directors geographic area of “prime” responsibility.
CHAPTER MEMBERSHIP, on the other hand, is non-existent. A chapter is composed of PEOPLE, not some surveyed, plot of land. We make every attempt NOT to dwell on an individual’s “Home Chapter.” Our Members and guests make their own decisions as to the chapters they wish to support… they belong to every chapter that exists within the GWRRA.
CHAPTER MEMBER is a designation that, unfortunately, is often misunderstood. GWRRA has Members. Chapters do not. CHAPTER PARTICIPANT is the preferred term to use when speaking of Members that attend chapter meetings and participate in chapter functions.
An important concept that officers must always remember is that our Membership is NOT under obligation, real or imagined, to attend or participate with any individual chapter. On the contrary, it is the responsibility of each Chapter Director to present as attractive a package as they can muster to encourage participation. That’s the key.. .make them an offer they can’t refuse! Your success as a leader is measured by the chapter attendance at your events. Remember, you are not responsible for having events for Non-Members, or other chapters. Take care of your own, first, last, and always!
The Chapter Director has final approval on all decisions relating to the operation of the chapter, and if your chapter staff is functioning as it should, then you will become more like an administrator to the chapter, giving directions to coordinate a smoothly operating chapter where everyone feels a part. In fact, your job, as Chapter Director should consist mostly of educating, informing, training, coordinating and directing the chapter through the Assistant Chapter Director(s) (yes, you can have more than one Assistant Chapter Director in a large chapter) and chapter staff. The more you make the Members feel an important part of the decision-making, the better operating, more enthusiastic, fun-tobe-in chapter you will have.
So, use your Assistant Chapter Director(s) as an extension of yourself. They should function in that capacity under your direction just as you function under the District Director’s direction. If they are to be the next Chapter Director then you owe it to the Assistant Chapter Director and your chapter participants, to provide all the training and experience possible. The more you allow your Assistant to do for you, the more they are helping the chapter. Give them all the responsibility they will take. You are going to put in many hours hard work over the months and years ahead building a good chapter. Some day you will place everything you built into the hands of another Chapter Director. Shouldn’t they be the best prepared hands you could train?

Lin and I are pleased to announce the appointment of Julianna Polka as the Trike SIG Region A Coordinator . Prior to accepting the Region A Coordinator position Julianna was the District Coordinator for Alabama and has done an outstanding job in making Alabama an active and participating state within the Trike SIG program. Her goals are the same as ours and that is to make the Trike SIG group a very active and participating group of trike riders through out GWRRA by offering our trike riders something extra to do beyond there chapter activities. Julianna lives in Harvest Alabama with her Husband Mickey and are also very active participants of Chapter B, Rocket City Wings out of Huntsville AL.
Let's welcome Julianna to her new position and give here all the support that we can to make the GWRRA Trike SIG what we all want it to be. An ACTIVE and FUN group for our GWRRA trike riders and another reason for them to want to retain their membership with GWRRA.
To find out more about what the Trike SIG is doing these days go to our website http://sig.gwrra.org/trike. If you have any question please feel free to send me an email or give me call at the number below and I will be happy to talk with you. You can also reach Julianna direct at jul iplo ka*c hart er:net

October was a fun time for me but to tell you the truth I have been so busy with so much that the faster I try to get things done, the further behind I get. I feel like the race driver that was so far behind he thought he was ahead.
Alabama is welcoming a new GWRRA Trike Sig Coordinator. Tammy Hollingsworth, Huntsville, AL CH-B, will soon begin her duties and replacing me as the District Coordinator. Tammy will continue to keep our database up-to-date and growing.
Hooray Alabama! You asked for trike training and seminars and you are going to get it!!!
Big news for Alabama trikers is the TRC to be held at the District Rally March 29, 30, 31, 2007. Please support this effort by signing up as soon as possible. Space is limited. Kay Leonard, our TRC certified Instructor is willing to put together 2 courses if we get enough folks signed up.
TRIKE COURSES $50.00 PER PERSON. Send money only after notification of availability. You will be notified of availability! Send request for course, how many people taking the course and your Rally Registration to:
Don't let the $50.00 per person entry fee discourage you. The fee will include a free lunch and most importantly, after completion of the course, you will receive a partial refund.
Depending on space and time availability, we are going to try to hold our seminar more than once thus giving you an opportunity to spend an hour with our guest speaker, Kay Leonard and not miss out on some of the other great activities offered at the AL District Rally.
I went to the Bandit Getaway Panhandle Rally in Crestview, FL where I met with the FL District Director and District Educator. We had a pleasant and informative discussion about Trike SIG. I have the full support of the FL Officers to get Trike SIG FL up and running. Florida is a huge state and I am in awe of the District Staff keeping their members united and busy with Fun, Safety and Knowledge.
While at the Bandit Rally, I had the pleasure of meeting the Georgia Assistant Ride Educators, Danny and Janet. How happy they were to hear that Charles & Linda Vaughn, GA Trike SIG Coordinators were working with the trikers in GA. The Vaughn’s will be working with the GA District Officers to bring a TRC to the District Rally in Ga. next year. Meanwhile, we are also going to try to get you Georgians a seminar presentation at your Rally.
Do you have new triker riders in your chapter? Please tell them about Trike SIG and have them contact me so I can get them on the database OR visit our website http://sig.gwrra.org/trike/ to sign-up directly.
Until next month...
Ride with the Eyes of an Eagle.
