The GWRRA Rider Education Program (REP) is intended to make the motorcycle environment safer by reducing injuries and fatalities and increasing motorcyclist skills and awareness. The REP does not propose to have all the answers. However, our close-working relationship with the Motorcycle Safety Foundation (MSF), as well as additional GWRRA programs and studies, has provided a wealth of information for use in establishing a comprehensive Rider Education Program. Through Commitment, Education and Application, we can reduce our accident rate significantly. Listed below are several benefits of a fully implemented GWRRA Rider Education Program at the Chapter level:
The motorcycle community is already realizing many positive benefits from the GWRRA Rider Education Program. Through the efforts of the Rider Education Officers and participation of the membership and others, we will reach our goal of establishing the safest motorcycle environment possible.
Level I of the Rider Education Program is also referred to as Safe Miles. It represents the commitment of the Rider and/or the Co-Rider to practice safe motorcycle operation whenever they operate their motorcycle.
Safety is a state of mind which can only be attained through total commitment. Every successful accomplishment begins with a commitment to reach the intended objective. This is true of the Rider Education Program and includes a promise to learn for the sake of Rider, Co-Rider, friends and family, and others on the road.
Though there is no mileage requirement to enter Level I, the commitment to safe riding is tracked by the number of accident free miles since joining GWRRA. Accident free miles are accumulated in 5,000 mile increments and may be updated at yearly intervals.
Requirement: Verbal commitment to ride safely at all times.
No cost to sign up. Patches available at $6.00 per participant
Receive: "Safe Miles" patch, Rider (or Co-rider) Rocker, and mileage pin.
Level II of the REP is also referred to as Tour Rider. It represents the commitment of the Rider and/or Co-Rider to be safer motorcycle riders by taking approved motorcycle riding courses at regular intervals.
GWRRA has chosen several educational training programs for the Riders and Co-Riders such as the MSF (Motorcycle Safety Foundation) programs, the United Sidecar Association course, the CSC (Canadian Safety Council) programs, and the GWRRA's Advanced Riding courses and Parking Lot Practice programs. (See note in the Rider Education Manual on PLP.)
Completing these courses provides the foundation and skills for your quest to be a safe motorcycle rider. All recognized programs with the exception of the PLP are taught by qualified and Nationally certified instructors. PLPs use our Facilitators to administer the program.
For the Co-Rider, we have provided an excellent seminar and "Two Up" programs to assist in their role in the safety aspect of motorcycle riding.
Motorcycle education goes "hand in hand" with commitment. The "on bike" education by MSF, USCA, CSC and GWRRA for the Rider and Co-Rider and the "off bike" education designed specifically for the Co-Rider, provide a very effective approach to motorcycle safety. This is when a REP participant truly begins to understand what the Level I commitment means and sees the value in the program.
Requirement: Rider - a Certified Rider Course with 5,000 safe miles. Co-Rider - certified Co-rider Seminar or 2-up Rider Course.
No cost to sign up. Patches available at $5.00 per participant
Receive: "Red Triangle" patch for either Rider or Co-rider signifying Level II participant.
Level III of the REP is also referred to as Certified Tour Rider/Co-Rider. It represents the commitment of the Rider and/or Co-Rider to be prepared in the event of an accident to give aid and possibly save lives. This is done by being knowledgeable in First Aid or CPR and carrying a first aid kit on their motorcycle at all times.
It would be wonderful if we could achieve the coveted goal of zero accidents; however, we know realistically, accidents will happen. Because of this, it is important to be fully prepared to lend aid to unfortunate accident victims. It is important to always be prepared to save a life. Level III of the Rider Education Program was developed to deal with such circumstances by recognizing and encouraging proper First Aid or CPR training. CPR (Cardio-Pulmonary Resuscitation), has been used to save many lives. Being trained to render CPR or First Aid is a tremendous asset to those the REP participant will come in contact with daily.
Requirement: Current in Level ll and have taken either First Aid or CPR training.
No cost to sign up. Patches available at $4.00 per participant
Receive: "Certified Tour Rider" or "Certified Co-Rider" patch
Level IV is the most prestigious of the REP levels and is referred to as Master Tour Rider/Co-Rider. It represents the highest commitment of the Rider and/or Co-Rider to safe riding and preparedness. This commitment is shown by a demonstrated history of safe miles and current certification in both First Aid and CPR.. These Master Tour Riders/Co-Riders are the finest example to everyone of the highest commitment to safe motorcycle operation and preparedness.
Level IV of the REP, the Master Tour Rider, was designed for those special caring individuals who desire to "be all they can be" with regards to motorcycle safety. The requirements are more stringent than Level III and require a greater commitment. These individuals are caring, trained and prepared with the experience to back them up. It is realized Level IV is not for everyone, but for those who desire to be of greater service to their fellow man, it is the correct prescription.
Why desire to be a Level IV Master Tour Rider? It's a worthy goal. Being prepared to save a life is a high calling indeed! These individuals are shining examples to the rest of the GWRRA membership. Others aspire to practice the same commitment as displayed by those who have attained Level IV. For that reason, because these individuals are ambassadors to the members at all levels, GWRRA provides a special gathering to celebrate the Master Tour Rider commitment each year at the District Rally, Region D Rally and Wing Ding.
Requirement: Current in Level lll for one year and have taken both First Aid and CPR training. Have 25,000 Safe Miles and must be committed to riding with "Proper Riding Gear" at all times.
Cost: $35.00 for each participant (Black and Gold patch is available for another $8.00)
Receive: "Special Triangular" patch with dark blue border and your individual Master number embroidered on it.
Note: all Level Program Patches are also available in "Black and Gold"
at a charge of $1.00 extra per level for levels I, II, and III.
So there you have the program structure:
The GWRRA is proud to present the Rider Education Program. We encourage you to think seriously about motorcycle safety and be a participant in the GWRRA Rider Education Program. You should also remember the old cliché, "an ounce of prevention IS worth a pound of cure." Always wear protective riding apparel!

Helloooooooooooo, Folks.
Well, I'm a little sad. Just got back from the last rally of the year. It's that time of the year when things settle in a little and rally season comes to a brief close. No fear though...next Spring, we'll be getting in gear again. Biloxi is always a joy. Mississippi folks really know how to put on a rally. I've never had Dippin' Dots... I've been reborn!!! It's an Ice Cream Revolution!!! Oh my, my. Those little bitty dots had some real big taste. I can't believe I've never had them before, but my first time was at Mississippi's Rally. We had a few first times at Biloxi this year. Greg & Renee Dempsey joined us. This was their very first Rally ever! We were once deemed the "Babysitters"; we can now add a new hat to our collection (not those pretty sequined kind that I always get) but another title per se. We are now the official rally financial advisors. Yeppers. Between Steven & me, we were able to help Greg & Renee melt some plastic (credit cards that is). I do believe Greg may very well have gotten the Oil Filter award this trip. Well, all I can say is that they are learning from some of the best. Renee has started a collection of sequined hats like me!!! No one can say that we aren't supporting the economy. Through rally vendors we are indeed.
Rally Report:
Attendees: Greg & Renee Dempsey, Betty Werman, Roy & Anita Fosnight, and Steven & I, Mike & Alice Chapman; Marvin Hungate; Dennis & Anne Greer; Betty's son, Kenny: 5 Bikes; one Trike; one car; one Hotel-on-wheels (RV); and one hot rod van.
We started out on a Wednesday afternoon heading down to Meridian, Mississippi. We didn't get to stay in a Holiday Inn Express, so we woke up the next morning kinda groggy and not too smart. Well, this is MY story and I'm stickin' to it. Instead we stayed in a Holiday Inn. The next morning...we head out to the Rally. The weather was fabulous. The company was fine. We end up at the Super 8. We now know why they call them the Super 8. There's usually about 8 different things broken. Some of us played musical rooms. Some stole others' air conditioning. Some just had fun regardless. A little bit of a bad situation but it gives you something funny to talk about. It's never a boring moment with the Alabama gang.
We taught the newbies the game of "99". They were so excited, they let me play a round and I was already out. ;-) The newbies also stirred up some stuff when they first got to the rally. I won't go into too much detail cause I think there is a posse of vendors looking for them. Let's just say, a comment was made that a certain discount was given to folks wearing a certain color ribbon. It was hilarious. Alabama folks may have stirred it up, but the rest of the region was gung-ho to keep it going. Gotta love the newbies. With a little free time before the rally got kick'n hard, Betty Werman, Anita Fosnight and I went letterboxing. We went on one hunt that took us through some interesting roads. Betty and I decided that when Anita is driving the van, we must take our dose of Dramamine....we were getting a little sea-sick just being near the beach. Some of those little hills and dips were doozies. Ever wonder why they call it Drama-mine...It keeps folks from being so melo-drama-tic.
Just before leaving town, we made a pit stop by the Hotel-on-Wheels gang (Mike & Alice) and Alice cooked breakfast for us. That microwave coffee, cookies and Little Debbie-like snacks were just awesome. Alice really knows how to entertain. And Roy said she'd still be in bed that early!!! She was wide awake, bright-eyed, and bushy-tailed. Nonetheless...she and Mike offered up some down-home, good-ole, southern hospitality.
With a little sand under our feet and the "Stars of Hollywood" coming out, we had a great time. Gregg & Pat Harbison (MS DDs) have a great staff and it was a wonderful rally, as usual.
Earlier in the month, we set a record for the year I believe for the number of participants on a scheduled ride. The Dismal Canyon ride on 4 October was a blast. We had people that have not ridden with us in a long time, some that ride with us all the time, and a bunch of newbies. About 2 more events, and I guess we can't call them newbies anymore....they are well-seasoned oldies... ha ha. Note: Age is not the factor in describing the members. Chapter B is all young'uns. Dismal Canyon was glistening with Gold... Wings that is. Afterwards, everyone decided to get a bite to eat and where else but a Region Traveling Plaque giveaway just down the road about 11 miles. AL-B took it home by a landslide. We had some great competition though. Numerous chapters were represented: Chapter S (the sponsors), AL-Y, and AL-N along with the Assistant District Directors, Robert & Gail Brown. This Region Plaque came up to us all the way from the Miami, Florida area. For a more detailed trip report, see the Rocket City Wings 4M. While we were working fun for the North, some of the other members were working the South. I hear AL-W had a great Kick-off Meeting. Too bad we can't be in two places at once.
Ending the month, we went out to the Follett's house for a great Chili Dump. Again, numerous chapters were there. AL-D (Anniston area) {umm... I was told Oxford}, AL-N, AL-T, and of course AL-B. The Folletts had some friends down from Colorado. I think they were secretly laughing at everyone for being chilly. Coming from their neck of the woods, Alabama was WARM. They were super nice folks. A few folks showed up late but Lisa Knapp had a darn good excuse. She was taking the Trike Course earlier that day. She didn't drop her bike NOT ONCE!! Yeah for Lisa! We are so proud of you. I'd like to encourage more people to take these riders' courses. They are fun and very beneficial. If you've had them before, take'em again... refreshers are worth it. Now, I don't mean if you took it last weekend to take it again next weekend. I'll give you a few months leeway in there! Ha ha. It's not up to me nor anyone else, but if you do it, do it for yourself. You'll be glad you did. Back to the c-dump... We had wonderful chili (OF COURSE!) and some yum-yum desserts. Nice toasty fire and a fun-filled hayride. By the time we did the hayride it was getting a tad chilly but we had a nice bunch to participate. We lost no one on the ride but we believe we saw a Polar Bear in the dark... ummmm it barked though??? Hmmmm... the biggest white dog (or bear) I've ever seen in person. The sky was lit with dazzling stars just winking at us as we cruised through the dark and spooky neighborhoods. We didn't tell ghost stories but we did mention a few stealth-mode goats and open-range cattle. No one fell off but almost fell back laughing. It was a great hayride. Obviously, Maxine (the cartoon) hasn't been on a Follett Hay Ride.
Since we are on the subject of 4-legged animals....the deer avoidance warnings are for real folks. On our way down to the Couple of the Year gathering, we were cruizin' up a busy interstate and out of nowhere came Teen Bambi. She was hunt'n a place to cross. She headed for a high-speed car and decided nope. Then she found an opening between cars and none else but Goldwings. She proceeded to run up the side of the interstate in the grassy area and upon her commencement to cross............ it happened......... tick-tock-tick-tock.................. with the speed of light reaction, Steven Hollingsworth (my hero) was able to make enough noise with his horn to deflect her decision to cross in front of us. She stayed on the side till we passed. We didn't hear any brakes squealing after we passed and we hope she decided to head back into the woods. Up the road a piece, there was evidence that one of her family members was not as lucky. So, watch out for those Bambi's and Teen Bambi's and Gramps Bambi's and just any critter actually. Be safe. If they can show up on the side of a busy interstate, they can show up anywhere.
Sunday (26 Oct) after breakfast, we met back up to head up to Lynchburg, TN (yes, again). Lynchburg has some wonderful Lemonade....the kind made with real lemons and no whiskey added. We grabbed a bite to eat, visited Judy's Leather, Stopped in on Miss Bobo's house, and drank lemonade till the cows came home. Then we went home. Naturally, being the Goldwingers we are, we naturally had to decide where supper was gonna be. We ended up at La Ameda, Mexican if you can't tell, on University Drive. All was good and everyone went home............ but......... you guessed it!.......... Steven & I...... and Joye. Yeppers... we are corrupting our visitor from Florida. We are trying to talk her into moving to Alabama. Nonetheless, we have dubbed Joye as an official "HOMELESS" person. We talked until the Mexicans went to bed!! Ha ha....not quite but it was a good long while. Steven and I are learning that even from chapter-to-chapter, state-to-state, or region-to-region, GWRRA folks are just about the same. Everyone loves ICE CREAM....GO FIGURE!! I'd never thunk it! Everyone likes to do a lot of the same things....and everyone appreciates being a member of the vast GW family.
Speaking of Cows... there's word out that there are some cows out there that are in stealth mode or incognito. If you see them....just be careful. I hear they are having an udder-ly hard time keeping them under control. They seem to have some kind of Udder-Blast disease. At anytime their udders are prone to detonation. If you see a "cow" running toward you....run faster....something bad might happen to you one way or a'n-udder.
As with open-range cows... beware of the roaming Elk & Moose. There's rumor that there is a dwarf species hanging around out there. Keep your eyes peeled. Oh yeah... watch out for low-flying airplanes too.
In all of our travels and from all of the good advice we get from the "family"... the best darned advice we've ever gotten was to purchase some Gerbings. That is only if you like to ride in cold weather and you have college tuition funds you can get to without your child(ren) finding out. They DO NOT have to know that you invested in a suit instead of a degree for them. I won't tell if you won't!! My goodness... just today...I'm heading into work. I hit the temp button... 34 degrees. Yikes!! NO FEAR - I've GOT GERBING GEAR! I actually got a little warm!! Yes! It's true!! I'd never thunk it. These things are better than sliced bread, but 2nd place must go to the Cool Vests we purchased for hot-weather travel. Folks, I'm set.....I'm ready for HOT, COLD, and Ice Cream. Note: Ice Cream works for me anytime. Oh yeah...Steven is warm and toasty too. I let him buy a suit for himself...right after he bought my suit. He's so kind. He's the best. He even hooked mine up first. I'd rent him out but he's too busy with chrome parties. ;-) Just kidding. Steven is NOT FOR SALE.
Update: I thought I had scared the Canadian geese away; they are back. The fountain in the pond by the Sparkman Center was on the blink for a while and when they got it fixed, the geese came back for a while. So, it wasn't my quackin' after all that ran them off.
Till next time...watch out for geese, elk, polar bears, low-flying airplanes, and udder-ly whacky cows. Word is: 31 October is the peak season for these phenomenon.
Long live Goldwingers! Roll Out Goldwingers!
It's not about the destination, it's about the journey.

"Shake Your Tail Feathers!"
GWRRA has a new Rider Course in its inventory; it is the Advanced Rider Course (ARC). The Trike Rider Course (TRC), the Trike Trailering Course (TTC), the Trailering Course (TC), and the Sidecar Rider Course (SRC) were already available.
When the opportunity to become an ARC instructor was announced, I signed up, especially since the training course was going to be conducted during the Mississippi District Rally. The Alabama District paid the registration fee for me, but I just learned that because I was already a TRC instructor, the registration fee would be refunded. I'm sure Sue and Roy will be glad for that.
So, I arrived at the MS Rally on Tuesday midnight after leaving work in Huntsville at 5pm. The instructor prep class started at 8am Wednesday and ran four days. Each day we spent four hours peer-teaching each other in the classroom and then practiced about four hours on the riding range. Every evening we instructor-wannabes left the training site and tried to see what was happening at the rally. We got to see the costume contest and pizza party one night and the talent show another night and that's all.
Mark Zingery, the GWRRA National Rider Education Director and a Master Instructor Trainer, directed the course and kept us busy every day. Ron Lantz, our Region A Rider Education Director, and Buddy Shirley, Mississippi District Rider Education Director, mentored and directed us as we progressed. They were being certified as Master Instructors.
On the last day of the rally, we six instructor-wannabes "instructed" eight riders and four co-riders in our first ARC. All riders and co-riders completed and passed the course with no "accidents". The course was deemed a success by all participants. Mark Zingery proclaimed that all six of us were now certified ARC instructors.
I didn't get to see much of the rally, but I now can bring the GWRRA Advanced Rider Course to Alabama, so it was a good rally!

As I approach the crest of a mountain, I see a city...
Everywhere we go, everywhere we roam.... we always make it to the other side. Into the city we go, and wherever it takes us, we'll never know. We do know this for sure... we come back with new friends and the good feeling that we get each time we go to a rally, or fun day, or any GWRRA event. We've been so blessed to be who we are and to be able to go where we do. It's the most wonderful thing being honored as Couple of the Year. As we approach each mountain crest, we know that we will have fun and that the destination was not the only goal. The journey leads us to experiences that we would possibly not have experienced just by showing up. Showing up to represent our Chapter as their Couple of the Year, we've found a new commonality that breaks the ice for every conversation. It's a realm that we never imagined. I once was lonely but now I have a new family of friends. This is more than I ever hoped for. Steven and I bought a Goldwing because we wanted to have fun. We thought it would only change our lives to a minimal. It's a total transformation for us. We've become smarter (KNOWLEDGE); we have become more skilled & safer drivers (SAFETY), and along the whole journey, it has been FUN. I asked God for good quality FRIENDS. And that's what I got. I thank God for you....all of our wonderful friends.
A very good friend once said... "It's the motorcycle that brings you into GWRRA; it's the people that make you want to stay". That may not be the exact words, but it's the concept. It's the most inspirational quote I think I've ever heard.
As we approach the Snowball Conference, Steven and I are truly starting to understand just what it means to be honored as a Couple of the Year. It's a gift. We got this honor at Christmas and it was the best gift we've ever gotten. We are going through all of the motions to be prepared for the day of selection, but you know what, there isn't that much preparation involved. It's an attitude. Once you get dressed up and you put on your "stink pretty" (that's Steven's quote for cologne), the rest is easy. What is bad about being a little nervous? Nothing. It means you care. If you weren't nervous, you don't care -- that's my philosophy. I've got the gift to gab; Steven is running a close second {please hold the laughs & smirks}... the rest is a breeze. All we have to do is be ourselves and have FUN. If people cannot sense our passion for this association, then they are not sensitive. We just about live and breathe GWRRA. Shucks, you'd probably believe me if I told you I have a GWRRA logo on my drawers! Well, a girl has to keep some secrets!!! LOL ;-)
I love to be selected, nominated, volunteered or whatever it takes to be part of the FUN. It's all about fun. We have to convince ourselves into believing we must work (unless you are like Don Grundt who has found his way into retirement along with a few other few select members), but being part of GWRRA, fun is incorporated in such a way that it's conducive and addictive like a drug. I can go for days without WORK, but I cannot go for long without having FUN with the group. No matter where we go, goofy just seems to ooze out of me. However, proof below shows that it's addictive and even the most serious nuts like Steven can really get into character. He stole part of my luau costume and he looked so darn cute, I couldn't take it away from him. It's all about attitude I tell ya!
Nominee for What? Recent photos just surfaced. Some Couples have been caught failing to dress in attire suitable for a Goldwing function. The culprit has been seen around town. Some folks say it's peak season for this weird phenomenon. Some of the photos portrayed were taken in early September timeframe (just around the Region Rally, I believe). I don't know where the Luau dog came from but I believe that it may be where Steven stole his outfit for the rally.
Sometimes being goofy is just a little too "natural" for me... but still yet... I'm just having fun.
Robert Brown wrote an article about First Timers and whether or not they will last and become old timers. Being new to a chapter is sometimes an unsettling experience and folks are curious as if they will be welcomed or treated in a friendly way. As Chapter Couple of the Year (a better word description is Chapter Ambassadors) for our chapter, Steven and I try to make everyone feel welcomed. Robert mentions that "... first impressions are the deciding factor if they return." I think sometimes our first impressions might be so outrageous that folks return just for morbid curiosity, but what they truly discover is we are just first timers as they were... we've just attended more functions than they have. I don't usually sit around and wait for someone to welcome me, I just go up and introduce myself. Its gets the technicalities out of the way and we can start having FUN. Steven and I have made so many friends that way. Like I said...it's all about attitude. Just because you are not nominated as Couple of the Year, or as J-4-Genius, it doesn't mean you can't be a Chapter Ambassador. Anyone can be an ambassador. Go out and have fun. Talk about what you do and you'll attract people. A lot of strangers walk up to me (when I've received the J-4-Genius) and tell me that they have never met a Genius...and I tell them "and you still ain't" but then I just commence to spluttering about GWRRA and I explain to them that you must stay in a Holiday Inn Express to get as smart as me!! To be a Genius, you have to join GWRRA. See GWRRA stands not only for Gold Wing Road Riders Association but for Genius Wannabe Riding Round Altogether. That's my story and I'm stick'n to it. We all know the real meaning... GWRRA stands for Gold Wing Restaurant Raters Association.
Just last weekend we got back from the Couple of the Year gathering. For those of you that don't know, we gather around in a circle and count to make sure each couple consists of 2 people, and one is male and one is female. After that, we commence to just learning about the process and what it will be like if selected as Couple of the Year. In order to become Couple of the Year at District level or higher, you have to partake in a selection process. There's a lot of things involved like giving a presentation in front of a LOT of folks. Could be nerve-wracking but if you have in mind what you want to talk about, it won't be so bad. At the end of your "speech", the judges will ask you a question or two. At our Couple of the Year gathering, they gave us a little practice session. Steven and I got the first question. It goes a little like this...."If you had to pick one of the following to describe your spouse, which would it be and why would you choose it?"
Choices were:
I chose Aged Scotch cause Steven is very mature {hold snickers} [remember this is my impression of Steven] and with age he just gets better and better and sweeter and sweeter. To prove that point, he answers: Fine wine because Tammy {<- that's me} is all sweet and bubbly!! Awwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwww... shucks... now ain't that sweet. Okay... he wins even if I don't!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! {Brownie points start chingin'} {cha-ching, cha-ching}
Who cares if we win or lose... we are gonna have sooo much fun. We do plan to try to win though. We will do our very best to honor our wonderful chapter. If you want to hear us answer the next question, show up to Snowball and have yourself a good time.
Well, November is just around the corner and then there is December and then SNOWBALL... I hope we will see you all out in the audience root'n and toot'n for us. You folks are what makes it fun for us.
Before I go, don't forget to thank a Veteran this month and the next month and all year through, but for sure, say it LOUD this month. I've found the definition for a veteran:
"A veteran is someone who, at one point in their life, wrote a blank check made payable to the United States of America for an amount 'up to and including my life.' That is honor, and there are way too many people in this country who no longer can conceptualize it."
Too many veterans have cashed that check. Don't you think it's about time to give them some "change" back. A hug would be nice along with a "thank you". Hug your veterans. For those who've cashed their checks in, a United States American Flag on their gravesite looks mighty fine. Uncle Sam wants you... to honor our vets.
Long live Goldwingers!
It's not about the destination, it's about the journey.

AL-B Couple of the Year, Ride Coordinators, and
District Vendor Coordinators
"Shake Your Tail Feathers!"
Attendees:
On 14 Bikes -- Steve Hollingsworth, Randall & Bonnie Southerland, Greg Dempsey, Jimmy & Faye Williams, Hiram & Lisa Bass, Marty & Lisa Knapp, Bettye Caryl, Bob Caryl, Richard Chapman, Don Peck & Daughter, Beverly Peck, Jeff & Stephanie Brownback, Serge M'Sadoques, and a new friend to the area, Joye Williamson.
On 6 Trikes -- Jake Lawyer & Kathy Lawyer (together), Roger & Peggy Allen, Avery Howard, Walter Gersch, Sue Chapman and Tammy Hollingsworth
Guest Appearance: On 1 bike -- Ben Jennings
I would have written this report last night but we didn't get in till about 10:30 pm or so. A few of us broke off from the others that rode home after the plaque giveaway to go find (what else) some ice cream. The fun didn't end there. We ended up at Richard & Sue's for a short version of a "chrome party" and then off again to dinner at Ruby Tuesdays. The day started off when we started out at Cracker Barrel: Avery, Kathy, Jake, Steven and I. We grabbed a bit of breakfast. Out in the parking lot we could see this '05 Black Cherry 1800. Did not know who it was, but I kinda figured it must be Joye. Joye Williamson came from Florida to fulfill an assignment here in Huntsville for a year. Being an avid rider, Joye was looking for someone to ride with. After a little emailing, she shows up for the Dismal Canyon Adventure. We all start over to the Shell Station (meeting place) and WHHOAAA!!!!!!!!!!!
Do my eyes deceive me????? It was the most beautiful sight!!!! Goldwings... everywhere! There was a Valkyrie and I think a Kawasaki too. After counting, we discovered that we had 20 bikes and trikes ready to ride. We had one guest appearance by Ben Jennings, one of the nicest men around, who could not stay and ride because he had a friend that had a few available moments to help him put on a new GPS that he'd bought earlier. Ben being excited about the GPS did at least want to drop by and say hello to everyone. It's always nice to see more smiling faces. I hope you are enjoying that new GPS, Ben!
As we traveled through Decatur, I caught a glimpse of the reflection of the still waters. As we rounded corners I could have sworn I saw some twinkling. As time went on, it was obvious where the twinkling was coming from. Smiling Faces!!! Everyone had grins from earlobe to earlobe. It was the most beautiful pleasant day and to have so many friends with us was ultimate awesome. As we passed through Decatur and the industrial fog from that area over there, we reached clear skies and serene peacefulness. The ride was just so relaxing. We had so many bikes, we had to break up into 2 groups. Group 2 was doing some serious showing off. We performed lane change maneuvers and CB checks like pros. Randall Southerland being an instructor, we had to show him how synchronized we were. I think we impressed the best! Thanks to a great leader, Randall, and a great tail gunner, Hiram Bass. We had a very successful ride. I hear that Joye, another great tail gunner with Marty leading had the same success. We all reached Dismal Canyon; some went in, some went over to the Chapter S gathering for the Region Plaque. Richard & Sue Chapman, Steven & I, Greg, Hiram & Lisa, and Jimmy & Faye took off to be at the Region Plaque grab. Being fairly new in GWRRA, Greg, Hiram, Lisa, Faye and Jimmy wanted to get a better idea of what this plaque gathering was all about. Just before cut off time, the rest of the gang showed up to eat and gather. With exception to Richard & Sue, each of us riding with Chapter B yesterday morning, we racked up over 1,500+ miles to count toward the plaque grab. We succeeded. A big thanks goes out to Chapter S who sponsored this plaque grab. We had a lot of fun. The other chapters that showed up was Chapter Y, Sarah Keeton, Chapter N's Terry & Barbie Cleveland and some friends of theirs (sorry, I didn't catch all of the names, please forgive me), and of course the Assistant District Directors, Robert & Gail Brown.
It was truly a great time and a huge gathering.
The day gets better. Some decide to split and head home while, Richard & Sue, Steven & I, Hiram & Lisa, Jimmy & Faye, Jake & Kathy, and Greg head out to find ice cream. We made a grizzly discovery. TIGER HUT WAS UP FOR RENT!!! They closed it!!!!! Oh my! It will never be the same around Rogersville. They have (had) the best upside down Banana Splits around! With tears in my eyes, disgust in my voice, the rest of the gang led me down the road to find a Dairy Queen. After being thoroughly traumatized, now I need therapy, we finally found a Dairy Queen in Madison 160280. Have you ever seen a football player do a dance on the field when he makes a touchdown? Well, I have a similar dance when we find ice cream!! ;-) Almost before we finished, I ended up wearing a little more ice cream than I ate, but it was delicious and it saved the day. While eating ice cream, too late to do anything, I mentioned a drive up to Memphis for some ribs. It's sad that you can't stretch time on weekends and shorten it on weekdays. With a frown we decided, Memphis had to be for another day. While doing some homeless parking lot chatter, we discovered Jimmy needed some minor adjustments to his bike. We all went over to Richard & Sue's and checked out their new garage! Whoa! I could yell 'Goldwing' and I heard an echo!!!! We fixed Jimmy up (well the boys did); the girls sat inside and talked girl stuff. By then, we decided it was time to head out for dinner. Don't ya just love those half day rides that turn out needing all day to complete. ;-) We headed back (full circle moment) to Ruby Tuesdays by Cracker Barrel / Shell. We ate dinner, laughed, ate, and then we did a little parking lot conferencing and then we finally ended the day. It was the best turnout we've had in a long time!! It was such great company and we all seemed to have the best time! I think after the Goldwings hit town, the Dismal Canyon needs a name change to Blissful Canyon. It was not a 'dismal' day by no means!!!!
Goldwingers RULE!

Don't Worry "B" Happy
As a reminder, the "Grandparents' Bragging Room" is a section of the newsletter where we want to hear about your family.
You know all of those times that you have felt guilty because you wanted to share some really neat thing that your grandchild did. Well, now you can, and you don't have to feel guilty!
What a wonderful time we are having in October. We had a cookout at our house for people who donate a lot of their time to the GWRRA AL Family. We went to a Motorcycle Rodeo and had a great time with all who attended. We have traveled from one end of the state to the other twice, been to Helen, GA with our Son and Wife and lots of Family and friends. We went to MS to have a good time with friends and had a great time instead.
We went off to Chapter-W's kick off and had an action packed week end. We met up with our oldest Granddaughter (Stephanie) on Friday and caught up on what she had been doing. We went to a really good restaurant called Ed's and bought her dinner and just enjoyed listening to her talk and sharing time with her. On Saturday we went to Chapter-W's kick off and had a great time with all. There were ten Staff members there and Chapters from AL, MS and FL. It was held at Mac and Renee's home and we sure thank you for inviting all of us to your home. We ate more than we needed to, as usual, and sure had a good time with everyone. After the Kickoff we went for a guided tour of USA and saw all the buildings Stephanie had classes in. Later in the evening we attended an ice cream social at Sonny and Sandra Roy's house. A nice group from Chapter-A showed up to eat, stuff ourselves on homemade ice cream, and kick tires. On Sunday we had breakfast with Friends and Stephanie at Cracker Barrel. Frank and Linda Teasley were nice enough to ride north with us as far as I-459. It is very hard to beat a week end with friends and you cannot beat one with a grandchild.
The next week end we were in Helen with our son, his wife, Tammy and Steven, Alice and Michael, their son Jon and his wife; and a bunch of our son's friends. We had a really great time in the GA Mountains and even saw some of Chapter-F on their week end ride. Nice people and delicious food provided a truly good experience even though they were all on different types of bikes. It was nice to get back to the basics.
The next week end was in Biloxi, MS for Stars on the Coast. We were shown a great time and took home some wonderful memories. We have been going to Biloxi for a lot of years and have always had a good time. We are all ready registered for Tupelo and have room reservations. If the MS folks do half as good a job as they did in Biloxi it will be a good time. Thanks Greg and Pat and all the MS Staff.
The next thing going on is 1-Nov-08. The Region and District Plaques are up for grabs at the Greenbrier Restaurant off I-565. Please come and spend some time with friends and if nothing else, you can make some new ones. We hope to have some out of District folks show up for the Region Plaque.
Some things that are coming:
Please remember that Freedom isn't Free and remember our folks who are in Harm's Way, be they Military, Law Enforcement, EMTs or Firemen.
The next time you think about riding, call a friend, they are probably thinking the same thing.
Please have a safe and fun Thanksgiving.

While attending the Mississippi District Rally I saw several people with ribbons on their shirts that identified them as "First Timers," I have also seen these at Wing Ding and at other District Rallies. While riding home on Sunday I thought this would be a good subject for an article.
"First Timers" that come to a chapter meeting are nervous and unsure of how they will be greeted. Will they be welcome? Do they know anyone there? Remember first impressions are the deciding factor if they return. When visitors show up at your meeting make them feel welcome. Introduce them to the other members. Let them sit with the chapter MEC if they do not know anyone at the meeting. Make them feel that they are a part of the group. Make sure they are added to the chapter e-mail list for future rides and events. Tell them about rides the chapter has taken and how much fun they will have by participating. Let them know they are always welcome. If these people have a good time at their first meeting you will probably see them again. Don't let them be the "Last Timers".
I hope that all of us can reflect and remember our first chapter meeting and our first rally. We all shared the uncertainty and fear of not fitting in. Please don't let your "First Timers" become "Last Timers". Help them become "Old Timers" like many of us in GWRRA.
The more you know the better it gets.

Hello Fellow Wingers;
This month, I'd like to talk to ya about "PR"; PUBLIC RELATIONS. As Corky and I drove around our great state and others as well, it came to me that we are all in the business of public relations. Every time we ride our highways, we project an image. It's up to us as to what that image is. Our motorcycles command the attentions of everyone on roads; parking lots and any were else. How we conduct ourselves as we are driving our motorcycles is a direct representation of the GWRRA and us.
It is a fact that sometimes a driver will make a mistake of some kind. Generally, the four-wheelers make those mistakes. However, sometimes we make them. How we react to those mistakes is very important. Do we retaliate by doing something aggressive or simply accept it for what it really is, a mistake, especially if it has produced no adverse results.
I was attempting to make a lane change recently and didn't realize that there was already someone there! A mistake made by me because I had not completely confirmed that the lane was available for me to move over. I checked my mirrors about a minute earlier and "ASSUMED" that the lane was still clear. It was not. Fortunately, for me, the driver of the four-wheeler paid attention and gave me enough room and time to make corrective actions. Mistakes happen; reacting to them is what causes the problems. I made an apologetic gesture as he drove by and he accepted it for what it was. He gave me his thumbs up as he went by. Gold Wings weigh about 1000 lbs with one up. If we should get into a battle over real estate on the highways, we all lose. The bikes, the GWRRA and us.
"ROAD RAGE" has no place in our riding world! It is our job, all of us, to insure that we don't project an adverse picture of ourselves. We are finally getting over those connotations of non-motorcyclists that Wingers are like the Hell's Angels of the past. Let's all try to keep it that way, K???
Corky and I have logged over 2,000 miles since I last wrote to ya's and believe me, we have had plenty of opportunity to deal in PR!! I hope that we have projected the proper image.
Remember, "Keep the Rubber Down, It Works Best That Way"

Well it's almost here the annual get stuffed by the stuffed day, this leads me of course to think of other stuff that may not be as damaging to my waist line and something that all of us as motorcyclist and especially Wingers should think about our health. I recently embarked on a challenge of sorts with two other members of chapter A (Jim Lee & Kurt Guillot) who realized that we all needed to lose some weight. We chose Weight Watchers and as a group of three I think it has been really successful and wanted to share that success with you. I've lost since my last doctors visit 27 pounds 17 of which I have lost since I've been on "The Diet" the other two folks have had equal or better weight loss results and as a whole I can say that we really do feel better. The change has not dramatically affected what I eat, only how much as I found out that I don't have to keep going back to the buffet until my knees give out. I also try to make healthier choices when I'm in the buffet line.
What has all this to do with motorcycling well for one it is an activity that requires you to be in good health, if you're not in good health and you are the rider the results can be disastrous. The ability to keep a bike up diminishes rapidly when the speed of the bike slows and your ability to keep it up right is directly affected by your heath. Think about your ability to react to changing traffic conditions or situations and how you will keep your co-rider safe, even if you do not feel well. Being over weight leads to a variety of related other problems heart disease being at the top of the list along with diabetes, and a host of other maladies. I have to admit my main reason to lose weight was the recent addition of my first grand-daughter, but a secondary reason has been to keep riding as long as possible.
The last part of this Thanksgiving article is to honor those people who have decided to trike so that they can keep riding. One such person is Chapter A CD Sonny Roy, he and others in our chapter have made the decision based on their health to go from two wheels to three and that takes courage and I know one day that perhaps I too will be faced with that decision. I hope if I don't realize it that someone has the courage to remind me that perhaps it is time I moved to three wheels. Ultimately we all have to make personal decisions based on our health and I hope that this article gives you some time to reflect on what you want to do and how long you want to do it.
Until Next Month

Alabama is losing more members than we are gaining. We need to set a Goal to regain our inactive and past members.
E-mail, preferably send out postcards or make a phone call to inactive and past members. Sometimes a person does not know about the Chapter or where and when they meet. A person may have left for health reasons or they have become interested in other hobbies. They may appreciate you taking the time to find out how they are.
Chapter-N is planning a Reunion with all their inactive and past members. They hope to find out what everyone is doing now and see if they are interested in coming back to join in the fun.
Retention is a critical issue. Finding ways to enrich the GWRRA experience for every Member is vital to our survival.
The primary social structure of GWRRA is our Chapter network. All Members, whether they are new or have been members for a number of years, should be contacted and invited to experience a GWRRA get-together or ride, and, of course, invited to share a good time. They should be made to feel welcome when they enter through the front door.
The Chapter Director and his staff and regular participants hold the power to keep the back door locked and even make it invisible.
The obvious logic is to make sure as many Members as possible enjoy a rich GWRRA experience which will increase our overall RETENTION.
Happy Recruiting,

It's just about November and here we are!! Just around the corner is Thanksgiving, then OH MY Christmas. Where has the time gone? Let me look at my journals... well, the time went to A LOT of rallies... fun days... event rides... clowning around... and just winging it. It's that time of the year that all of it starts to S-L-O-W Down (well for the majority). Then there is the minority. Some have invested in some new Gerbings (that'd be Steven and me) and we ARE LOVING THEM! They are better than pie with ice cream al'a mode. Well... it's a close tie. It's hard to compare anything against ice cream. However... in the upcoming Springtime, just in time for none other than Alabama's District Rally, we are going to see if we can find some cotton candy and some other "down home" goodies. I still don't think we can find anything to outdo ice cream, but it never hurts to look. Nonetheless, Gerbings are so great. We will be able to ride all through cold weather feeling mighty toasty. I will avoid ice storms but other than that... I'll be looking for the rest of the braves on the road. For the rest that don't like to bother with cold weather riding, I have a solution for you... save your money up. Wintertime is the time for game nights. Or you can travel by car to a nice casino. If you win money, just save at least half of it. We are hoping to have some great vendors at our rally. You'll need to save some money to spend with them. Who knows we might have a Gerbings vendor and you can put a down payment on your winter riding apparel. ;-) I don't know if we will have a Gerbings vendor yet or not at all, but rest assured, we have lots of rallies to visit that will have one of 'em. We just got back from Mississippi's rally. Those folks really know how to throw a "Hollywood" party. I don't think they invited Britney Spears so we all had a good time. It was nice to see those smiling faces and our beloved vendors.
Riding breaks are usually best taken during the cold months if you decide to take any. Riding breaks give you time to wash your bike, do some maintenance, have a chrome party or two, just in time to gear up for the next adventure. Next year is just "around the next bend." We'll be kicking off rally season with our Snowball Conference. We need everyone to come out and join us for a good time. We promise it will be some new things going on this year. January 17, 2009 is the target date. After the riding breaks, you'll be able to catch up with some old friends and maybe some new friends and plan your upcoming year. If Snowball is like the previous year, we hope it will be a sunny day and you'll get to ride your bike, but if not, bring your car. If there's snow, bring your snowmobile. It doesn't matter how you get there, just get there. We promise you'll have some fun. There'll be some nice door prizes and games. And, us, of course... there's your best reason to come to Snowball. If you need a hug, I'll be just like the Wal-mart door greeters, waiting for you with a big smile and better than a Wally-world greeter, I'll be offering up a bunch of hugs.
Till we see you again, Happy Thanksgiving. If we don't see you in the month of November, then have a Merry Christmas. If we don't see you in December, we'll wait for you at Snowball. If we don't see you in January... I'll be huntin' you down!!! Ha ha
Till next month, ride safe.
