Rocket City Wings
Huntsville, Alabama -- Chapter B, Region A
Friends for Fun, Safety & Knowledge
-- From the Chapter Directors
Chapter B got off to a great start in April. First we had a recruiting day at Cycles Unlimited in Decatur. The staff there was fantastic. Not only did they have an area with a table and chairs, they also made signs and offered special "Alabama GWRRA Chapter B" pricing on their 2012 Gold Wings. We meet and talked with a lot of people that showed interest in joining us at this month's gathering. Next, while a few of us went to the Louisiana Rally, the rest of the Chapter continued the recruiting effort at the Chicken and Egg Festival. The reports I have received indicate that this was another successful endeavor as well as fun event.
The Alabama Rally was next on the agenda and our Chapter showed up in force. Not only did we take the largest Chapter over 50 miles away, we managed to take the largest Chapter in attendance period. To top it off we took second place in the talent show and in the scrapbook competition. Faye and the other members that helped her deserve a huge show of thanks for putting together the scrapbook in such a short amount of time. Renee and I would like to say thank you to the Chapter members that worked at the rally. Not only did you take care of our responsibilities, you filled in where ever you were needed.
At closing ceremonies, Roy and Anita, along with their staff, stepped down as District Directors. They have done an outstanding job over the last 4 years and I'm sure they will continue to do the same in their new position as Region A trainers. Please let them know that we appreciate all they have done not only for our chapter but for all the chapters in Alabama. Robert and Gail Brown are our new District Directors and I'm sure they will keep Alabama at the top of the heap in GWRRA. You can see their new team (staff) on the district web site.
South Carolina and Tennessee held their Rallies the very next weekend. Renee and I had planned to attend South Carolina but the doctor said she couldn't travel that far. From what I have been told, everyone that did attend had a wonderful time. As for Tennessee, our very own Aaron and Pat participated in the Couple of the Year selection. Although they weren't selected, they did a great job of representing Chapter TN-Z and our chapter. Make sure you congratulate them on a job well done.
As good as April was, May looks to be even better. I know that there aren't any Rallies in our Region, but that gives us more time for local rides and I don't know about you, but I'm ready to do some back road riding. To kick things off we have a Bike Night at the DQ in Madison on the 10th. I hope I can convince some of you to try ice-cream. I know that you would prefer tofu, but you need to get out of your comfort zone and just go for it. On the 19th we have a chapter ride to Soda Pop Junction. I really need to have a talk with Kevin and Darlene, every time they schedule this ride I have to be out of town. Oh well maybe someday I'll get to go. I should have a good time anyway. Steven, Tammy, Renee and I will be accompanying Jake and Kathy to the Region A Chapter Couples overnight social at Lake Seminole in Donalsonville GA.
We will finish off May with the annual Motor Awareness Day at the Alabama Welcome center on I65 at the Tennessee State line. Chapter B has the morning shift from 8:00 to 12:30. I will go over the details at the gathering on the 8th. For those of you that are interested, the Missouri District Rally is scheduled for the 31st of May to the 2nd of Jun. I would like to get a group together and make a good showing at their Rally. Just give me a call or get with me after the gathering if you want to go.
In closing, Renee would like to say thank you for the visits, cards, calls, thoughts and most of all the prayers while she was in the hospital. She is doing great and looking forward to getting back on her trike.

Chapter Couple Notes
-- From the Chapter Couple of the Year
April was a great month. As busy as it was we actually managed to get to church a couple of times.
We went to Cycles Unlimited in Decatur on Saturday, 4/7/12, for a Recruitment Day, where we had a really good turnout. They made all of us feel welcome with signs, announcing we were going to be there, and special sale prices in honor of the event. We all had a good time; but we always have a good time no matter where we are or what we're doing. That's one of the things I like most about our chapter and our members.
I may be a little slow at learning things but eventually I do learn. I have learned that at the chapter gatherings I can count the money better if I delegate out the jobs that take in the money. Does that make any sense? If Jake, or Lisa, does Membership, and Avery does Participation, and a designated someone does 50/25/25 tickets, then I can count and divide the money up much better. After the March Gathering I found that April went much smoother by doing this. Of course, in my case, when I do Membership, I get brain freeze. The list is in alphabetical order by last name. I know the first names but when I try to match that up with the last name on the Membership list I get Brain Freeze. So this job is most definitely better off done by someone who is better with names than I am.
We left after lunch Thursday, 4/12/12, with Steve, Tammy, and Greg, for the Louisiana District Convention in Lafayette. Due to some time constraints we went in the Traverse instead of on the bikes, pulling the red trailer with Jake's oxygen tanks and all the luggage. It worked out well. Our room at the motel, next to the rally, was a little different, to say the least. We had two queen beds in one large room and a full bed in a small room off to the side. We all made a mad dash to get the small side room; Greg won. The rally was great, although Jake and I were told that the attendance was really down from last year. Tammy and I got to judge the costume contest. I was so busy laughing at the costumes that I had trouble remembering to write my notes. We headed home mid-afternoon on Saturday so we would get back in time for breakfast at Edith Ann's Sunday.
Jake and Steve left for Mobile Tuesday, mid-morning, 4/17/12, pulling the trailers with all the luggage. Tammy came by and picked me up that evening about 7:15pm and we rode 2-up down to Mobile. I love night riding and we made good time. For all of those who went to Mobile, THANKS, 'cause our chapter got largest attendance. I also want to thank everyone who participated and assisted in the Talent Show. We got 2nd place. Sure, it's not 1st place but, it's much better than no place. I really had fun doing it and I hope everyone else did too. There was a good selection of vendors, thanks Steve, and lots of things to do. And best of all, for the district, I heard that attendance was up overall. We got to eat at several good places while there but the best place was The Boiling Pot, where we ate lunch one day. A small group of us came home on Sunday, tired but feeling good.
Thursday night we went and sat in the parking lot at Moe's, just in case someone came, but everyone was at Spring Fling. Did anyone notice that we didn't get to go???
Until next month, ride safe and ride often.

In the Spotlight
-- Tommy & Joann Kenner
|Tommy & Joann Kenner|
Back in May of 1977... Joann would go by Tommy's place of employment ... and in his words "he was swooning her before she even knew him". At the time, she wasn't giving him the time of day... but being a bit persistent.. he finally got up the nerve to ask her out. Their first date, a Foghat concert. About halfway through the show, he could tell she just wasn't comfortable.. turns out, she was in to country music! That's all it took though for them to start seeing each other and within a few weeks, Tommy packed up and moved in with her. Their courtship might have been a short one... but it took a bit longer for them to actually tie the knot. Tommy said he moved to Memphis for work .. and Joann followed. That's where they were married in October of 1981. They lived in Memphis about 10 years, before returning to North Alabama. Tommy has worked for Culligan Water for 35 years and as of now, Joann is a housewife, although she has worked several jobs outside the home as well.
Joann was 13 when she got her first "mini" bike ... Tommy's first was a dirt bike. Joann tried to ride that one too, but after dropping it.. she stayed clear! Tommy has owned 8-10 bikes over the years. At the present he has a Harley and Joann has her own Honda Shadow Trike. When they aren't biking it with the Chapter or with other friends, they each like to fish. They are also in the process of remodeling a home. (Apparently not their first time to tackle a remodeling job!) They have one child, Pamela and one granddaughter, Hannah.
When talking about what they see in the future when it comes to rides.. they both would like to travel to California. Sounds like fun to me!! Maybe we all need to go out West for an adventure!!
Tommy & Joann are active in Chapter B ... and seem to always have a lot of fun.
